Frequently ask questions:
1. Do you cook Dinner every night? I prepare dinner every night. To make things easier we have certain nights that the meals are the same. For example. Mondays are Red Beans and Rice. It's something I picked up when I lived in New Orleans. So about once or twice a month I make a big batch and freeze it. Then on Monday all I have to do is heat it in a pot and cook the rice and corn bread. Doing it this way saves a lot of time. 2. What is your favorite quick meal? I actually have two. The first is Chef Jacques Pépin's quick pizza. It's made with a 10 inch flour tortilla. It takes about 6 minutes to cook and the kids love getting to create their own pizza. Second is faux pho. This is a Vietnamese dish and it also takes about 6 minutes and is fill with fresh herbs and vegetables. These meals come in handy on the days we are very busy. 3. Have you ever cooked a bad meal? Yes. It was a Scandinavian dish and it was bad. I don't have a clue what happened but I didn't try it again. 4. Do your kids eat everything you cook? Yes except that Scandinavian dish. They still talk about it. 5. Are all your meals fancy? If by fancy you mean hard to cook or complicated, then no, but if you mean fancy as in how they look, then yes. The quick explanation for this is that garnishing and presenting the meals make it more of an event and that's one of the things one Moore kitchen is about. Making every meal an event. 6. Do your kids like and/or eat a lot of vegetables? Yes. They are a part of every meal. Start them young and make it look good. 7. What's your best tip to get kids to eat things they may not normally eat? Wait until they are hungry. When we eat around 7:30 or 8, they can't wait to eat and after they have eaten they realise what they thought they were not going to like was actually good. Hungry + Looks and smells good = no problem eating. 8. Are most of the things you cook fresh? As fresh as I can get them. I can't think of many things that we get that come in a box or can. Maybe cake mix, pasta, tuna, tomato sauce and chick peas for hummus. 9. Do you shop at a regular grocery store or does most of your food come from a farmers market? I wish we had a good farmers market! The ones we have are poorly stocked and most of the produce comes from the same fruit jobber or wholesaler the grocery stores use. So when I can I buy from a market but most of the time it's the regular grocery store. 10. What's something thing you tell people who are just starting to cook? Cooking is a love thing. Prep is to cooking as foreplay is to sex. You better not leave it out. Next would be to keep your meals simple. 11. Who taught you to cook? Cookbooks and cooking shows. The biggest thing was a had a passion for food and cooking. 12. What do you want people to get from one Moore kitchen? I want people to understand the importance of eating together as a family and you don't have to be a great chef to cook great meals. I think everybody strives for a good life and it can all start at the dinner table with your family. I don't expect people to start their own one Moore kitchen complete with it's own menu. That's just something I did to make it unique for my kids and it worked. However, in doing it this way maybe it will inspire others to start their own dinner traditions and memories. Remember the "Good Life" is filled with good food, good music and good conversation. |
